Signs have been erected on the Peak Downs Highway to promote the theme of Historic Nebo and to greet people as they travel through Nebo Shire.
As part of the Nebo 2001 Centenary of Federation Celebrations, a "Historic
Nebo Monument" was constructed. This monument faces the Peak Downs
Highway and acts as a window to the Shire. A fully-sealed visitor
parking and truck stop rest area also compliments this area as an
informal and easily accessible facility for Peak Downs Highway
travellers or visitors to Nebo Shire.
Historic Nebo
The Coast to Coal Sculpture symposium links the Mackay Region and endeavors
to demonstrate the cultural diversity of each Shire. The sandstone
mololith was supplied by Burton Coal Pty Ltd and designed and sculpted
by Adrian Vanderlugt. Local endangered species (within Nebo Shire) are
featured in the sandstone sculpture, e.g. Red Goshawk, Wedge-tailed
Eagle, Bustard (Plain Turkey) and Python.
Historic Nebo Hotel
Nebo's Heritage listed Hotel still retains great character and hasn't changed
much since it was built overlooking Nebo Creek in 1862. The current
structure relaced the original slab hut hotel some years later, still
under its original name, the Fort Cooper Hotel. It was renamed the Nebo
Hotel in 1948. The dance hall may no longer be there, but the spirit
still survives. Well worth a visit just to soak up some history and
enjoy a cool ale.
